BS&W (Basic Sediment & Water) is a term known in the oil and gas industry. In layman’s term, it measures the content of sediment and water in crude oil. The higher the BS&W value, the worse the oil quality. When BS&W value is less than 0.5%, the oil is in a good BS&W. Therefore, a mechanical and chemical handling is needed to achieve that BS&W value. However, mechanical handling sometimes fails to produce crude oil with a low BS&W.
Demulsifier is a chemical that works to break the emulsion of water-in-oil. By injecting demulsifier, emulsion separation will be faster. Demulsifier works by reducing the surface tension of water droplets. As a result, water droplets will be easy to blend into larger water droplets. Furthermore, large droplets of water will be easier to separate from oil so that the BS&W will improve.
